Helping Children

There's a famous old saying, "It takes an entire village to raise a child." The 5th house of a birth chart designates how each person, whether or not they are biological parents, can help children progress. In the 5th house:

ARIES or Mars gives children lots of freedom, humor, playtime and creative stimulus. It must avoid encouraging aggressiveness.

TAURUS or Venus provides financial support and instruction in fiscal responsibility. It exposes children to music, the arts, carpentry, architecture and hobbies.

GEMINI or Mercury emphasizes diverse education, open and objective communication, and transportation, from trikes to bikes, to cars and planes. TV should be a teacher, not a babysitter. Siblings and "ohana" (extended family) play important roles in child care.

CANCER or the moon considers emotional and physical nurturing top priority. The home environment must be safe and secure; therefore, owning the home is preferable to renting.

LEO or the sun considers the child's self-esteem important and encourages dance, drama and recreational sports. It should lavishly praise children for every step on the way, but avoid teaching conceit.

VIRGO encourages cleanliness, order and organization. Authority figures should avoid being judgmental or critical. Healthy diet is emphasized. Pets allow the child to experience unconditional love.

LIBRA teaches honor, fairness, justice and refined aesthetic taste. The adult may treat the child as an equal, rather than taking a more customary authoritative role.

SCORPIO or Pluto plans ahead for the child's inheritance, and teaches responsible bookeeping methods. It is sensitive to the child's occult abilities and sexual energy. Firm moral grounding is essential so as to not impose inappropriate expression or repression on the child.

SAGITTARIUS or Jupiter emphasizes spiritual development and higher academic education. Athletics may be shared. The adult respects the child's need for freedom and adventure.

CAPRICORN or Saturn emphasizes discipline, and usually structures the child's life with distinct parameters of propriety. Sometimes, during early or adolescent years, the child may feel stifled or dominated.

AQUARIUS or Uranus wants to be a best friend, not just a parent to the child. The child may have "hanai" (adoptive) parents as well as biological ones who encourage originality, inventiveness, appreciation of other cultures, attunement to progressive humanitarian causes, and charity as a basic social responsibility.

PISCES or Neptune gives the child privacy, meditative space, and an intuitive bond. If the parents use drugs or alcohol, they allow the child to explore this dangerous habit pattern before the child can discriminate the repercussions of addiction. Water sports are encouraged for recreation.
